Sony Xperia ZL for AT&T garners FCC approval
Hirai and Co.’s Xperia ZL made a surprise FCC visit, which means that it could visit the US very soon. Uncle Sam got its mitts on hardware that supports LTE bands 2, 4, 5 and 17, along with HSPA over 1900, 1700 and 850MHz frequencies — a perfect match for AT&T’s network. There’s still no word from Big Blue or Sony regarding when the phone might arrive stateside, but there’s little holding it back thanks to government approval.

BlackBerry Z10 coming to AT&T March 22nd for $199.99, pre-orders open tomorrow
The BlackBerry Z10 has already been available in various parts of the world — and will soon be delivered to T-Mobile business customers in the US — but most consumers within the 50 states are still exercising a bit of patience. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear that American hopefuls will have to wait too much longer, as AT&T has announced that the flagship ‘Berry will be available for pre-order on March 12th for $199.99 on a two-year commitment, and should be ready for purchase in retail stores and online beginning March 22nd.

AT&T to update Samsung Galaxy Note II with Multi-Window tomorrow
Most US models of the Samsung Galaxy Note II have already been updated with Multi-Window — a split-screen feature that allows users to view two apps at once — but AT&T is the last of the four national powers that hasn’t pushed the feature out to its customers. That will change tomorrow, as AT&T has confirmed to us in an email that it will roll out the new build over the air at some point during the day. We’re happy that users won’t have to rely on Samsung’s proprietary Kies desktop software to update their devices, but minor downloads like this are typically facilitated OTA. There’s no word on if the ROM will be pushed out in phases to minimalize the impact on AT&T’s servers, but don’t be terribly worried if you don’t get notified right away. AT&T cutting returns and service cancelation period from 30 to 14 days, starting tomorrow?
Prone to bouts of buyer’s remorse? Well if you were planning an AT&T flavored purchase, you might want to start the car. A tipster has sent in what appears to be a notice to staff advising that the returns period for equipment and service cancellations will be shrinking from 30- to 14-days — effective tomorrow. Purchases made today would benefit from the longer period, and our tipster claims that there may be a grace period until November where returns could be processed as if still under the original scheme (what sounds, to us, like a courtesy for those who didn’t read the fine print). We don’t have all the fine print, but head past the break for a little more on the specifics.

AT&T officially releases Watson speech API, gives devs a bit of babel fish for their apps
Ma Bell’s been hard at work on its Watson speech recognition system for years, and 2012 has seen the tech show up in an automobile and a real-time translator app. Months after announcing it would grant Watson’s skills to the developer masses, AT&T has made good on its promise and officially released its Speech API. Samsung Galaxy S III coming to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular this month
Official is as official does… right? In a bid to one-up the Galaxy S II’s launch here in the States, Samsung has just announced that five carriers will soon have their own customized versions of the Galaxy S III. And by “soon,” we mean “beginning in June.” AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular are all in line to take part, with exact pricing and availability to be announced by each of the five carriers in the coming weeks. We are, however, told to expect on-contract prices as low as $199, and it sounds as if all five variants will keep the same 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display.
Naturally, S-Beam, S-Voice, Smart Stay and Android 4.0 (with TouchWiz) will be onboard, with Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 at the heart of each matter. We’re told to expect 2GB of RAM across the board, with Gorilla Glass 2.0 guarding against your clumsiness. Moreover, we’re reminded of the mythical Pebble Blue hue (which will be available alongside Marble White), with a removable 2,100mAh battery and 16GB / 32GB capacity options. Looking to learn more? There’s a bit left just beyond the break, but the real deets will be pouring out in the weeks ahead from the carriers themselves.

AT&T prepares internal systems for shared data, launch date still TBD
According to the memo seen above, Telegence has been tweaked to include a new group-level data feature node “in preparation for the launch of Shared Data.” This verbiage seems to suggest the new plans are coming in the very near future, but the communication is quick to point out that the launch date has yet to be determined. Unfortunately, since the new adjustments aren’t functional just yet, it could simply mean the company’s beginning the first wave of crucial internal testing. Regardless, its presence in AT&T’s systems is a great step forward, and a welcome one that’s been a long time coming. The question is, will the new plans arrive before Verizon can push its version out to the masses?

AT&T talking up LTE-enabled Windows 8 tablets at Developer Summit
If you’re looking for maximum exposure for your developer event, might as well host it during the same week at CES. For bonus points, have it in the same city. That’s precisely what AT&T has done for its 2012 Developer Summit, and while the majority of the sessions won’t tickle the fancy of everyday consumers, there’s one slot in particular that’s giving us pause. Titled “A Metro Style Hemi,” an afternoon session at the event will showcase a Windows 8 tablet, reportedly powered by one of Qualcomm’s many chips. There’s no details on whether or not a physical unit will be on hand with an active LTE radio, but it’s useful to know that Microsoft’s already talking with the carrier about hosting such devices. After all, we’re still believing that Win8-based tablets are a few months out (at the very least), but if AT&T’s already got one in its lab for testing, we could be looking at a little LTE + Windows 8 love sooner than anticipated. Let’s just hope it doesn’t pull a Jetstream on the pricing, eh?

Just because next week’s joint Samsung and Google event has been postponed doesn’t mean the leaks have to end. A Sammy handset with the model number I9250, which matches up nicely with the baseband version in the Galaxy Nexus shots that popped up, just made an appearance at the FCC packing a GSM radio compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile’s faux-G networks. It’s also boasting dual-band 802.11n, Bluetooth and NFC. Despite suggestions that the next Nexus device would be a Verizon exclusive, we could be looking at the AT&T version or at least the unlocked GSM model. The fact that it doesn’t support T-Mobile’s 2100MHz band leads us to believe this won’t be popping up in T-Mo shops. Also noticeably missing is any mention of LTE — that particular feature could still be the sole realm of Big Red. Hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer to find out all the details. Atrix 4G available for $100 from AT&T, just 50 bucks per Tegra 2 core
We’re not going to mince words, the Motorola Atrix has a number of urgent software issues that make it tough to recommend, but at least AT&T is pricing the Blur-saddled smartphone into the realm of reason. As of right now, the dual-core Tegra 2 device can be purchased for $99.99 when signing a two-year agreement with Ma Bell. Its qHD display resolution, 1GB of RAM and 14.4Mbps HSPA+ capabilities are still pretty much top notch, so if you can figure out a way to make peace with Motorola’s software, now might be the time to strike.
