Cathedral Art Installation Made from 55,000 LED Lights in Belgium [Video]

light 13 Cathedral Art Installation Made from 55,000 LED Lights in Belgium [Video]

The second edition of the spectacular Ghent Light Festival held in Belgium, for four days (from January 26 to January 29, 2012), displayed quite a few interesting projects. This year’s themes were happiness and music, portrayed in over 30 unique exhibitions. But the focal point of the event is said to have been a giant art installation shaped like a cathedral and made from no less than 55.000 LED lights. According to the official website of the festival, “Belfortstraat (Belfort Street) was the  domain of the Luminarie Cagna. A giant colonnade made of wood and hundreds of thousands of colored lights, with arches that remind one of Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. The entrance area only measured 28 meters high. The audience walked into a fairy tale gallery, surrounded by light and color. Energy Wasted? On the contrary, this immense work of art with 55,000 LED lights consumes only 20Kwatt / h of electricity“. Have a look at the video we found on This is Colossal for more details about the festival and tell us what you think of this art installation.

F-Light by Paul Coudamy

French designer Paul Coudamy has sent us images of his F-Light project, a ceiling/light made of discarded Airbus windows.

.

Description from the designer:

After having spent 20 years flying at 1000 km/h 10 km high above the ground, liners at the end of their life-cycle are left rusting at the far end of airport runways. These marvels of engineering with their ultra functional curves resulting from uncompromising technical research, are diverted from their original function in order to be integrated in our daily lives, thus offering them a second life.

The F-Light project is a diversion of the inner walls and windows of an Airbus 300. Its curves, windows and silvery isolation recycle the vocabulary of aeronautics to transform it into an unusual and functional light structure.

These walls are fitted together to create a « luminous ceiling » forming a shell in levitation. This dome delineates the space and offers a special intimacy beneath it. The system can be adjusted and offers unlimited variations : the panels can be put together in a row to suit the desired dimension.

The windows lighting offers circles of light which stand out against the panels and diffuse the light on the whole surface. A second indirect lighting set on the structure is reflected by the original isolating silvery material and enhances the feeling of levitation of F-Light.

In Brief: 5-year-old Analyzes Logos

In Brief

Cincinnati, Ohio-based identity designer Adam Ladd asked his 5-year-old daughter her impressions on some popular logos — my favorite is her response to the Republican Party logo. This is both adorable and some of the best and most authentic field research out there.

Family Home Displaying a Spectacular Design in Australia: Patane Residence

Patane Residence 1 Family Home Displaying a Spectacular Design in Australia: Patane Residence

Patane Residence was designed by the architects at bureau^proberts and is located in Newmarket, Queensland, Australia. According to the official project description we were sent, “the home was designed for a young family and occupies the crest of a hill facing south towards the Brisbane city skyline and Mount Coot-tha. A series of connected pavilions perched on solid concrete platforms encourage exploration and interaction whilst portraying a sense of permanency and refuge. The concrete construction enhances a sensation of intransience the client desired, while timber elements re-interpret the craftsmanship of Queensland home construction, responding to the suburban context of Newmarket’s 19th and 20th century dwellings. The home is intended to conjure summer memories of time spend in the cool, shaded spaces found under the homes of our childhood. Visitors are welcomed onto the middle level of the home. This transparent platform encourages family activity through connection between living space, play space and the street. Private spaces of the home are separated between the basement and upper level”.[Photography by Jon Linkins]

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet joining the Ice Cream Sandwich party in Q2?

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet joining the Ice Cream Sandwich party in Q2?
Wondering who’s next in line to promise a tasty Ice Cream Sandwich update? According to PC World, Lenovo has said that it plans on bringing the latest and greatest from the Android platform to its ThinkPad Tablet sometime during Q2 of this year. As we’ve become accustomed to of late, Lenovo joins other fellow manufacturers on the pledge to update its devices to ICS. Unfortunately, there’s no details past its estimated second quarter availability, so while we know you’re eager to get your hands on the holo-coated upgrade, you’ll have to keep waiting like the rest of the frowning pack.

Solid and Flexible Bamboo Chair In Limited Edition

Bamboo chair by Tejo Remy and Rene Veenhuizen Solid and Flexible Bamboo Chair In Limited Edition

The Bamboestoel (Dutch for Bamboo Chair) is a great chair design that captures the potential of a fascinating and versatile material. By using one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth to create a standstill of its texture and properties to create a nest-like design, the artists working on the project – Tejo Remy and Rene Veenhuizen – give the impression of considering the implications of loosing contact with our natural environment. It seems to me like bamboo is a material that constantly reminds us of something sensual and precious. Using bamboo instead of wood allows the artist to create a solid yet highly flexible design and the round corners and perfect thickness of the bamboo strips create a stunning representation of natural materials enhanced through modern woodworking techniques. The limited edition bamboo chair we found on BlogDecoDesign could be that object with a story behind it, the great design that adorns your inspired home. Or maybe you have other bamboo chairs you liked and would love to share them with us.
