Solar Cross e-bike soaks in the sun, powers your pedals
Ah, the bicycle — that first symbol of locomotive independence from our youth. How we’ve often wished you came with a motor, solar power and some rechargeable batteries to make that ride less… taxing. Well, chin-up childhood glory days, because Terry Hope’s done all that and a bit more. The self-described EV enthusiast outfitted a Specialized FSR bike frame — chosen for its double crown suspension fork — with an array of three solar slats, a 24-volt one horsepower motor, and three 5,000mAh Li-ion batteries to assist your pedaling on those grueling uphill climbs. The sun-soaked panels powering this 18-speeder’s motor are a homemade mix of polycarbonate sheeting, aluminum and 18- x 6- x 6- inch mono crystalline cells that generate a combined 8.7-volt charge to the batteries of your choosing. While its beneficial turbo boost isn’t intended to replace that Harley you’ve got covered in the garage, it will takeover on those lazy days when you just feel like cruising. Hilarious robot voice over for the environmentally-conscious cyclist after the break.

Cinderblock
I was cleaning out my closet earlier, extracting all of the winter woolens from the mix (I guess I’m finally willing to concede that it’s no longer January?) when I realized that I don’t wear half of these. Possibly more. Why?
Because I have a blazer-buying problem! Here’s the issue: In theory I think I like blazers, but when it comes to choosing an outfit for something that counts, I cannot stomach this particular garment. Why?
However, in those situations that induce real moments of self honesty, when I’m standing in front of my closet nervously tearing through shelf after shelf, both naked and late, I might not know what to wear, but it seems that I sure as hell know what I can’t wear. This higher Buddha-of-a-self that I seem to possess has instantaneous radar for any and all things that may cause me to feel ill at ease. And on the topic of blazers, this smarter-me tells me the same thing every time: “@#$(*@#$& THAT SHIT!” Beautiful. Alas, this wise creature likes to skip out on my shopping excursions, though, and therein lies the problem, and the reason that this is even a problem in the first place!
From time to time I’ll wear them out, but only to undertake something like grocery shopping, and in situations where I anticipate minimal human interaction. Because this makes a lot of sense: ”Oh, I should wear more of what makes me really uncomfortable!” Because that’s style.
You know what I have to say to that? FUCK IT!
I like a challenge, but this is one challenge that just isn’t worth it. Epiphany of the day: Personal style is a matter of being brutally honest with yourself. And honestly? Blazers; they make me feel like a HUMAN CINDERBLOCK (okay, rationally it’s ridiculous, so much for that). In any case, I don’t want to conduct my life feeling like a cinderblock. Can I? Yeah, sure. But I don’t want to, and I’m guessing that distinction is where “style” resides. If you don’t like it, ditch it. That’s style.
Do you ever feel like someone else in a particular style of clothing or interior?

Cool Urban Furniture: Bike Rack Shaped Like a Giant Comb

We have a lot of Freshome readers that love bicycles, so why not provide the best ideas out there? We published a few posts these past two months about unusual urban racks, but we have to say this takes the cake. Simply because it is highly original and therefore quite eye-catching. As seen on Monkeyzen, this wooden Giant Comb Bike Rack wights a total of 400 lbs (that is almost 182 Kilos!) and was ” handcrafted out of Mangaris using full mortise and tenon construction, while the hair is made from powder coated steel.” The project was achieved by the Knowhow Shop LA, as a public art installation for the city of Roanoke. We absolutely love this idea and hope to see many more similar projects in the future. After all, what better way to stir up the use of bicycles in the city, than providing residents with a cool and original infrastructure?

House E by Agraz Arquitectos
On a rather complicated but interesting terrain lies this house belonging to a distinguished client.
At the last house the house was called ‘E’ set in a traditional and exclusive subdivision in the city of Guadalajara, the home is able to conquer a fairly complex site and shot gun as a whole facade is built with houses next to it forming a new language with its environment. In plan the building is released three edges leading to the outside plant dynamic enough for a regular triangular site.
A large semi-outdoor patio nestled by a lattice of wood carefully shade and quality of space, is the remarkable and articulator of this house, this is where the dynamics converge outside of the family life. This place is complemented by a double height space leads to the foyer of access and distribution, which is animated by a staircase turned into sculpture climbs to the second level by articulating the space with light, like the one in charge of filling spaces that are armed with simple elements that find their glory in large white interiors that trap and control light generating spatial qualities that communicate with the outside through openings reasoned in complicity with the outside. These are built like fine gardens surrounding the house and recognize the geometry and ground motion
The use of materials such as white concrete, quarry and wood create a language sober, elegant and devoid of ornament, simple lines that enhance the strength of support and will formally request.
This work expresses a constant desire to find new elements to help understand and shape a new architecture that is able to collect simple categorical spatial conditions in figures are drawn as clean lines and clear space.

US Army testing haptic belt that nudges soldiers in the right direction
Haptic belts and other wearable devices that can guide you may not exactly be a new idea — we’ve even seen some DIY attempts — but the US Army testing them? Well, that’s something worth noting. As New Scientist reports, the Army Research Office in North Carolina is now working on just such a device (likely more advanced than the one pictured here), and hopes that the belts could eventually be used to remotely guide soldiers on the battlefield. That’s done with a combination of GPS, an accelerometer and a compass — and, of course, the haptic part of the equation, which vibrates or pulses to point the soldier in the right direction, or indicate when they’re nearing their target. The idea there being to reduce the need for any handheld devices (at least until thought helmets become a reality), which can both take the soldiers’ eyes off the battlefield and potentially reveal their position at night. There’s still no indication as to when the belts might actually see use in the field, but early tests show that they’re at least as accurate as a handheld GPS, and the soldiers say they actually prefer it.

Zee TV Sees Swooshes

Established in 1992 Zee TV is one of the leading television channels in India, and since 1995 has been both exporting Zee TV to other countries and expanding its roster of channels to include Zee Cinema, Zee Sports, Zee Business, Zee Cafe, among a line-up of 25 channels, all now under the corporate umbrella of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited. Earlier this month Zee TV introduced a new identity to roll out across all of its channels (except the Ten Sports brand) designed in-house with additional muscle provided by global agency Draftfcb.

Developed by the in-house team, Zee TV’s aqua blue colour new logo features a stylish font. The new age design with its upward flourish signifies the upward movement of desires and wishes. The abstract form of the ‘Z’ and vibrancy of aqua blue bring in modernity and freshness to the brand. “The unshackling of the ‘Z’ from the box symbolizes today’s woman’s zest for life and confidence to go out in the world beyond her home. The overall design has a progressive feel and reflects the idea of looking into the future with hope and depicts a more dynamic and spirited outlook. The rainbow of hope is a very important element of the new packaging. It is colourful, ethereal and symbolically emphasizes the promise of ‘Umeed Se Saje Zindagi’… celebrating hope and life,” says Goenka.

Identity promo. Video here.
Unveiling of the logo. Didn’t expect everyone to be so excited.
Let’s get straight to it: Both logos, old and new, are pretty bad and, strictly by relative comparison, the old one has far more energy and vibrancy to it. I imagine it as being a fake logo for a radio station that would be the main plot of point of an episode of Saved by the Bell, the early years. The new logo is generic and awkward, looking more like a “2″ than a “Z”. Everything about the main logo and the rest of the channels feels antiquated and cheap. It’s in the video promos that at least the cheesiness of it is so much that it becomes almost good. And seeing what Zee’s competitor, Star, did with their identity, Zee’s execution falls far too short.
Thanks to Saawan Ebe for the tip.

Traditional Architecture Meets Modern Design: Enclave House
Hidden behind an existing Queen Anne residence, the modern part of the Enclave House features fantastic living spaces divided by a beautifully landscaped garden while featuring parking facilities in the back of the lot. The front facade has undergone a restoration that avoided modifying the existing structure, look and elevation. Designed by BKK Architects, the Enclave House displays a classy facade, a main living volume, an outdoor relaxation and entertaining area and an office in the back. All these spaces were personalized for the owner’s family to support a comfortable and modern lifestyle. The backside addition features entertaining and living spaces spread over two floors. The 511 square meters are divided into interior spaces that can be transformed to suit the changing needs of the family. A raised pool located in the central courtyard displays a fascinating attraction for the children and adults. The backside volume can become a home office, while the basement can be transformed into a game room or a gym. Locally sourced materials were used all over the house and eco-friendly features ensure a minimal environment print. Do you feel that the house could have used more outdoor space?
