Brand New Awards, Deadline Extended

We have a small deadline extension we can offer to anyone scurrying around beyond the last minute to either submit or send us the materials for the Brand New Awards. So…Deadline is Wednesday, April 6 at midnight Central Time. This means that all mailed packages must be in our office on Wednesday, all electronic PDFs submitted via YouSendIt on must be in our inbox on Wednesday, and all uploads to FedEx Office must be logged on Wednesday. Judging is on Friday, April 8; we will use Thursday, April 7 to organize all submitted entries; and no more entries will be accepted on Thursday, April 7. The online submission form will be disabled on the morning of April 7.
Entries so far have been amazing. The winners will be well deserved as the competition is tough. We hope to see even more fierce entries in the next few days.

BlackBerry Touch / Monaco gets manhandled, said to get official in May
Our interest in the BlackBerry Touch (codename Monaco) was piqued when we first caught wind of the device, and we had a feeling it’d be making its way into the wild ever since one showed up in Verizon red around mid-Feburary. Now, BGR has managed to procure an unreleased prototype, and we’ve gotta say that we like what we’re seeing. According to the pub, it should get official at BlackBerry World in May, and it’ll run OS 6.1 underneath that 800 x 480-pixel screen. The new BB6 is said to use a BlackBerry ID in place of a PIN for certain key functions — a necessary move for non-BB platforms rumored to be getting BBM (a historically PIN-based service). BGR also claims it won’t be getting the Storm nomenclature, so we apologize in advance to the SurePress fanboys. Either way, we’ve got an inkling that we’ll be hearing more as we get closer to May, but unfortunately our dreams of a super AMOLED-equipped Torch running stock Android with a BBM app will just remain figments of our imagination.

Disney / Method Soap

Disney and Method partner up by creating a Mickey and Minnie hand soap! It combinines the shape of the iconic couple’s ears with the recognizable type treatment of Method’s.
“mickey and minnie are as iconic as they come. which is one of the many reasons we developed a naturally derived, biodegradable foaming hand wash in the likeness of Disney’s most delightful power couple. the gentle formula leaves hands feeling soft + clean. and in bright, fresh fragrances like lemonade and strawberry fizz, you don’t have to be a kid to recognize the scent of the happiness. let the foam party begin.”

A Unique Modern Bathroom Design: CORTEN Sink

We recently received a highly interesting sink design. According to the explanation given to us by the project developers, CORTEN is a bathroom sink designed by a3studiomadrid, a design studio composed by Diego Redondo and Maria Gil. The product is being manufactured by Tuesta Furniture, a Spanish company. CORTEN is a design inspired by architecture and is defined by clean and straight lines. With a highly original appearance, the product is adaptable to a variety of minimalist modern bathroom designs. The project was achieved using solid oak wood and one can choose from several different finishes. Freshome readers, how do you feel about wooden bathroom furniture? Do you think it has a more appealing aesthetic effect than the “conventional” appliances?

Acer CEO and President Gianfranco Lanci resigns amid disagreement about company’s future direction
Acer’s board and CEO don’t seem to have been getting along too brilliantly lately and now the situation’s come to a point with the resignation of one Mr. Gianfranco Lanci from the company’s helm. In a press release just distributed, Acer points out that Lanci held different views from the majority of board members about the “importance on scale, growth, customer value creation, brand position enhancement, and on resource allocation and methods of implementation.” Following a few months of discussions that failed to deliver a consensus, both parties have decided it’s best to part ways. For now, things continue as normal with Acer’s goal still being globalization of its product portfolio, whose centerpiece will remain the personal computer, according to Chairman JT Wang. He’ll be the man to take over for Lanci while Acer seeks out a replacement for the outspoken Italian.

HP rolling out webOS 3.0 beta to Early Access developers today
Interested in developing for HP’s upcoming TouchPad? Sure you are — but to play ball, you’re going to need access to webOS version 3.0, which the company has announced will be getting delivered as part of the festivities at its webOS Connect event in London today. Of course, you can’t just wander in off the street and get access to it: you’ll need to be signed up for the Early Access program, which has been dropping early webOS SDK builds on eager devs for some time. Naturally, we’d prefer a real, actual, physical TouchPad to the mere idea of a TouchPad in emulation coming from the soft glow of our laptop displays… but we’ll take what we can get while we wait for the June launch.
[Thanks, Michael]

Luxurious Hideaway: Villa Mayana in Costa Rica
Villa Mayana was designed by architect Enrique Barascout and is located near Hermosa Beach in Costa Rica. According to the description we received, the project was designed by architect Enrique Barascout and “is a perfect hideaway of absolute privacy and comfort. The main entrance features a covered walkway over a 2.000 square foot reflecting pool of black volcanic candistone. Lined with columns of white palimanan sandstone, the walkways lead to the East and West bedroom suites which flank the great room, the villa‘s central focal point. Construction followed a deliberate theme of rustic simplicity through the selection of natural materials such as sandstone, bamboo and Cristobal wooden doors and flooring. The result is a blend of casual elegance and comfortable luxury.” The villa has 6 double bedrooms, 2 living rooms and 2 dining rooms and can accommodate up to 16 people. The lowest rental price per week (for 6 people) is € 8955. What do you think- worth it?
