UM students make cheap and portable solar charger / light source for developing nations

Solar power is the most egalitarian of all energy sources, yet residents in many parts of the world still lack access to electricity. Three University of Michigan engineering students have created an affordable solution to this problem — to the delight of camping geeks everywhere — with the Emerald, a portable solar panel that does double duty as both a cellphone charger and personal light source. We’ve seen the personal solar panel idea before, but the price of entry made it an untenable solution for developing nations. Solar-powered light bulbs have been around for a while too, but the Emerald’s light lasts for eight hours on a charge (as opposed to the bulbs’ two to six hours), and it’s able to fully charge a phone in the same time it takes an outlet to do the job. They aim to sell the device for the low, low, price of under twenty bucks for customers in the developing world, which is 90 percent cheaper than other solutions and 100 percent more awesome.

Set

“Set is an award-winning, visual perception card game that is played around the world. For a design exercise, I wanted to explore a contemporary direction for its identity and package. The beauty of this game is how the cards feature iconic shapes and colors that, in a way, become a powerful identity in itself. For the logo, I was able to arrange these shapes into the word “SET” while keeping to the game’s definition of a set. For the packaging, I was inspired by the game’s origin: it was created by a population geneticist as a tool to understand different gene combinations. The design’s sterile and clean aesthetic is similar to the look of packages you may find in a laboratory.”

Perfect Modern Hormony: Mosman House in Sydney, Australia

Mosman House was designed by Corben Architects and is located in Sydney, Australia. This impressive three storey building is a display of flawless contemporary architecture and it offers quite a few spectacular sights. The mix of timber and concrete makes for an interesting contrast and a strong visual effect. The house opens to an incredible pool, which is the main point of attraction. Here is more information from the architects: The interior finishes incorporate American Oak timber floors to the living areas, Grey Limestone honed stone floors to the circulation areas, Walnut veneered joinery, white polyurethane cupboards, Quartz kitchen benchtops and Marble slabs in the bathrooms to create a contemporary, sophisticated interior with a warm inviting feel. Energy saving options were adopted including an operable skylight over the central core allowing natural light and ventilation, timber slated screens provide sun control, concrete floors and roof to provide thermal mass and energy efficient glazing to the external windows and doors. Bretagne’s Stripes

Bretagne Logo, Before and After

Bretagne (Brittany in English) is a region in the nortwhest of France. While I have never been to Bretagne, the region holds a special place in my heart as it is the fictional home to Asterix‘s village which resided right on the coast of a peninsula sticking out at the northwest of the northwest of France. But Asterix doesn’t pay the region’s bills and it doesn’t attract tourists or businesses, so the Agence économique de Bretagne has just launched a new identity to represent the region and has launched two separate sites with slightly different moods and information, one for tourism and one for businesses. The identity was designed by Lyon-based Communiquez (who were here last week for their design of La Manche — in case you are wondering, they didn’t submit work to be featured, they just happened to be the design firm of two separate identities that caught my attention).

Bretagne

The Bretagne flag.

The logo is based on the simple and striking black-and-white flag of Bretagne. The striped “E”s are a direct reference to it. Obvious perhaps but delightfully bold and relevant. The wordmark is set in TheMix designed by Luc(as) de Groot, a little dry but, of course, perfectly crafted. Slightly more gratuitous is a “BE” monogram that is supposed to act as “copyrighting” mechanism like Comedy Central or, you know, like the copyright symbol.

Bretagne

Holding shape for logo to be used with partners.

Bretagne

Sample of logo in holding shape on partner content.

The identity consists of two broad applications. The first uses the logo in a trapezoid that gets placed on top of Bretagne’s partner content as an endorsing mark. In the examples above the effect is subtle yet effective, allowing each partner to do whatever they want as long as they leave a little space for the logo. The second application is for materials coming out of the Bretagne brand, that use a nice visual device of bold black-and-white stripes in the lower half of the cover of communication materials, reinforcing the basis of the logo. Again, simple but effective.

Bretagne

Bretagne-specific communication materials.

Bretagne

Bretagne

Logo-laden liveries.

This identity is not perfect or groundbreaking but it’s one of the most solid destination identities, expandable to multiple materials, that have come through here in a while. A website, in French, with all the details of the new identity can be found here.

Windows Phone 7′s live tiles turned into a pretty convincing iOS theme (video)

Had enough of seeing grids and folders of static (Calendar app excluded, of course) icons on your iDevice? Well, here’s one option to relieving your tedium: a Windows Phone 7 theme for the iPhone and iPod touch. You’ll naturally need to jailbreak your iOS handheld in order to restyle it quite so dramatically, but once you do, you’ll have all your precious apps sorted in a neat alphabetical pile on one screen, with the other waiting patiently for your customizations and live tile choices. It’s a good looking little mod, we have to say, and it’s currently going through beta testing, so why not grab your iPhone and see if it can survive a lick of Microsoft paint without self-combusting?

Student Spotlight: Jenny Pan

“Via Vespa project brief: Design a line of skincare for an existing brand that is currently not in the beauty/personal care category. Elements include a collection of seven bottle designs, a gift box and display.”

Designed by Jenny Pan who is currently a graduate MFA graphic design student at Academy of Art University.

“Brand/Concept: Vespa as lifestyle: A unisex skincare line fit for the contemporary man or woman who is active with a youthful spirit and constantly on-the-go. The design is fresh and bold while still paying homage to Vespa’s Italian roots mimicking the scooter with its clean modern lines. Along with the high gloss finish of the bottles and silver chrome bottle tops, a tan leather display serves as a base for the skincare collection and completes the via vespa brand.”

Hotel Le Germain Calgary by LEMAYMICHAUD

The Germain Calgary boasts an exceptional location in the heart of downtown. On the corner of 9th Avenue and Centre Street, the hotel is a stone’s throw from all the city has to offer, across the street from the Calgary Tower and just minutes from the Convention Centre and Calgary’s various cultural institutions. Connected to the city’s network of elevated pedestrian walkways, the hotel, unlike other Germain hotels, actually opens directly on to 9th Avenue. The lobby features a two-story glass wall facing the main commercial street, thus creating a unique vibrancy between the street and the hotel space.

Furthermore, the Germain Calgary is part of a multipurpose complex whose original architecture has created a totally new landmark for Calgary’s urban landscape. Located between 8th and 9th Avenues, this development is composed of two buildings (the 12-story Hotel Germain and an 11-story office tower), which are straddled by a two-story spa, topped by tiered luxury condos with terraces. The complex forms a spectacular glimmering arch that lights up the Calgary skyline.

At Le Germain Calgary, the materials and interior design were selected to combine ease and comfort. “Our goal was to create a welcoming environment with a flash of innovation,” explains Viateur Michaud. The hotel’s exterior cladding of Prodema wood-laminate panels prefigures the warmth of the interiors, where wood is a dominant element. Beyond the impressive fenestration of the façade, the main entrance is a vibrant, active space where an immense glassed-in lounge open to the street takes up almost the entire lobby.

Between the lobby and front desk area, a wall of recycled felt, in shades of grey and black resembling shale, adds both texture and acoustic properties, embodying the exceptional spirit of the place: luxury, serenity and innovation. And this spirit can be found throughout the hotel, from the mosaic floor in the bar to the LED lighting in the hallways, to the volcanic rock adorning the elevator core. In addition, 90 wells were drilled to supply the hotel with enough geothermal energy to heat the water and some radiant floors. All rooms are equipped with the technological necessities of the modern traveller (e.g., Internet access, flat-screen television).

While the main entrance might signal the spirit of the Germain Calgary, it is the rooms that provide travellers with the true Germain experience. Though the experience varies from one hotel in the group to another, it is nonetheless the hotel group’s signature stamp. After the bathroom open to the room at the Germain Montréal (a true innovation at the time, now widely copied by the competition) and the personalized nature of the rooms in the Germain Toronto, the Germain Calgary offers an original sensory experience. Inspired by the often spectacular scale of the Albertan landscape on the edge of the Rockies, the hotel rooms evoke space. Everything is bigger: the bathroom, the work table and the room itself. The architects even designed a walk-in closet instead of a traditional one, which is always too narrow to hold both luggage and purchases.

However, the bathroom provides the biggest thrill. “We wanted guests to feel fulfilled, so we completely reinvented the traditional hotel bathroom squeezed into the back of the room,” explains Viateur Michaud. In fact, the bathroom now occupies a space the entire length of the room, from the door to the outside wall. This large, comfortable space is separated from the room by a multipurpose wood wall that features various shelves and storage spaces as well two immense sliding doors, which, when open, create an exceptionally large loft. In addition, thanks to a large window in the shower, the bathroom is bathed in natural light. Although made of frosted glass, this window includes a two-inch horizontal band of transparent glass.

The Engadget Show returns tonight at 6PM ET with Steve Wozniak!

Cancel your dinner plans, because tonight at 6:00PM ET, the inimitable co-founder of Apple Steve Wozniak will be joining us for the first Engadget Show of 2011! It will be a night to remember as Woz joins us for an evening of frank, eye-opening, and all-around awesome conversation. We’ll be streaming live at 6:00PM from Cooper Union’s Rose Auditorium and we’ve got about 200 seats available on a first-come, first-served basis if you want to join us in person. We’ll also have music from the talented Zen Albatross and the usual crazy giveaways. Trust us when we say that this episode is going to be epic.

REMINDER: The Show will be taking place in a lovely new venue, the Rose Auditorium in Cooper Union’s New Academic Building (i.e. not the TimesCenter), located in Manhattan at 41 Cooper Square. Seating is extremely limited, so get there early!

Tickets are — as always — free to anyone who would like to attend, but seating is limited, and tickets will be first come, first served… so get there early! Here’s the updated info on our new ticketing policy that you need to know:

  • There is no admission fee — tickets are completely free
  • The event is all ages
  • Ticketing will begin at the Cooper Union New Academic Building at 2:00PM tonight, Sunday, January 30th, doors will open for seating at 5:15PM, and the show begins at 6:00PM

  • You cannot collect tickets for friends or family — anyone who would like to come must be present to get a ticket
  • Seating capacity is limited (only about 200 seats in the theatre), and once we’re full, we’re full
  • The venue is located at 41 Cooper Square New York, NY 10003 (map after the break)
  • The show length is around an hour

Unfortunately, we won’t be running the usual text-to-win sweepstakes for this episode (we know it sucks, but it’s out of our hands), so if you want a seat you’ll have to show up in person.
