Cité A Docks Student Housing by Cattani Architects

Cattani Architects have designed the recently completed Cité A Docks student housing project, located in Le Havre, France.

The housing consists of 100 apartments made out of old shipping containers.

.

Description from the architects:

The new town is the result of the transformation of old containers in modular housing units equipped with every comfort. Mounted on a metal grid, the containers have given shape to a four-story building that houses 100 apartments of 24 square meters each.

The architect Cattani said the thoughts that accompanied her work. “How do I prevent students, prospective tenants, they feel put in the box? Compelling needs have arisen. Necessary to conceive of a lightweight, transparent, and certainly not solid. Hence the idea of independent living, to avoid the stacking effect.”

The solution was found in a metal frame that acts as a structural support to the old container, while allowing to stagger the units, and create new space for walkways, patios and balconies. “The metal structure – Cattani says – it allows a better identification of the different rooms, and enhances them through the external extensions that become terraces and balconies. The sequences of the transverse corridors giving access to the apartments on the façade create a succession of full and empty spaces that gives the structure a more visual transparency.”

The building designed by the metal structure is spread over four floors, which are distributed on the 100 studios. The first level was raised from the ground. In this way, the units here guests can enjoy the same privacy afforded to units on the upper floors. All the apartments overlook a garden inside and are equipped on both ends of the glass walls that allow natural lighting of spaces.

To ensure maximum heat and sound insulation, the walls of the container adjacent to the outside and those that divide the different units have been coated with fire walls in reinforced concrete 40cm wide, and come within layers of rubber to dampen vibrations.

The external facade is designed by the combination of the old “boxes” that has kept the undulating, repainted in metallic gray. Inside, the designers chose white walls and wooden furniture. Each studio has a bathroom, kitchen and free Wifi.

APRIL SHOWERS, LEATHER FLOWERS

Isn’t there a rhyme involving flowers and April showers? Am I missing something? Because the past few days have felt like summer, and I have never been happier to welcome 90 degree (read: this is not normal around here) weather.  In retrospect, I might have been a little overzealous, as the weather has cooled but my finger nails, in five different shades of neon, have not.  Oh well.

This shoe is, as you can clearly see, a product of my brief summer mania, and a fixation on fluorescent color that the warm weather brought. It seems I’m always on the prowl for things that suck in light and spit it out in an abnormal or otherwise blinding fashion. Is fluorescence my new crystal? Who knows. I’m very enthusiastic; almost as enthusiastic as I’d be if you told me I could take a trip to Technicolor munchkin land.  But I have one request: if I must fall asleep in Dorothy’s field of poppy’s, let them be… leather.

Someone, shake me awake, before it’s too late!

GoPro releases its budget-friendlier $179 HD Hero 960, teases 3D case for moneybags

GoPro releases its budget-friendly $179 HD Hero 960, teases 3D case for moneybags

It’s been almost two months since GoPro announced it’d be releasing a cheaper helmet cam, the HD Hero 960, positioning it beneath the $299 and 1080p HD Hero we enjoyed last year and give those doing professional stunts on amateur budgets a chance to capture their glory. Now here it is, yours for the taking today — if you don’t mind a resolution capped at 1280 x 960 and a deleted “Hero Bus” expansion port, meaning no external displays or batteries. That port is what you’ll need to use the company’s next accessory, a dual camera mount shown off at Interbike (and pictured below) pairing two of the HD Heros to film in 3D. You’ll need to manually stitch the resulting footage together, but there is at least a sync cable included so that the two start and stop at the same time — something sadly lacking on the Tachyon XC 3D. That mount is set to retail for $99, but the requirement for dual $299 cameras will price this out of most budgets. However, the $179 MSRP on the HD Hero 960 makes it a compelling alternative to Contour’s $220 720p ContourHD.

[Thanks, Jonathan]

5 Tips to Remove the Musty Smell from Wood Furniture

Depending on how old the furniture is and the type of wood, removing musty smells can be a challenge.  The source of how the furniture received the smell will also dictate what process will work or not.  You may have to try more than one method to ensure your remedy works.  Here are 5 tips to help you remove the musty smells from your wood furniture.  Be patient when working with your wood furniture, it has a history that you want to preserve and enjoy for years to come.

old furniture smell 5 Tips to Remove the Musty Smell from Wood Furniture1.) Dehumidify: Wood is porous and therefore will take in moisture, air, and smells of its surroundings. If your piece of furniture has been housed in an old house, attic, basement or garage most likely it has taken in a musty order from one of these. Try moving the piece of furniture into a conditioned room in your home with relatively low moisture in the area.  Use a dehumidifier and close the door and leave the piece of furniture for a few hours daily.  After a few days, see if this process has helped.

2.) Sand & Refinish: Another way to remove musty smell odors is to sand down the original finish and allow the wood to breathe for a few days.  Once again, leave the furniture in a conditioned space so it doesn’t absorb new odors and moisture.  Choose a stain and refinish the surface with 2-3 coats, allowing the stain to fully dry in between coats.  Apply a clear coat finish over the stained furniture to seal in color, and seal out moisture and air.

Wood Soap: Often times the culprit of musty smelling wood is germs and bacteria inside the wood.  This is especially true if wood was left in a moisture rich environment for an extended amount of time.   Use a wood soap product that is meant for cleaning and killing bacteria inside wood. Read the manufacturer’s directions on use and care for the wood before using. Use soap on all edges, corners, under handles and underside of furniture to ensure all wood has been well covered. Let furniture dry and see how successful this method was for you.

musty smell chair e1285530381304 5 Tips to Remove the Musty Smell from Wood Furniture4.) Sit outside in the sun: The premise behind this is the same as the dehumidifying step. The sun rays will help dry out the wood and will remove the musty smells. If you live in a dry climate with very little relative humidity you can try keeping the wood outside.  Under a covered or screened porch would be ideal, and preferably not for days on end.  If the musty smell of your furniture isn’t severe this tip may work well.

5.) Odor fighting substances: If you have a large armoire or dresser with drawers, it may be hard to reach all surfaces with some of the other tips.  Try placing coffee grounds or charcoal in an open container inside of the drawers and close.  Check back after a few days and replenish with new coffee or charcoal as needed. Similarly to charcoal filters, charcoal is a natural substance that may bring the musty smell out of your furniture. Once the smell has been removed you can paint furniture like new and no one will have a clue as to the history of your beautiful furniture!

musty smell white old furniture e1285529062408 5 Tips to Remove the Musty Smell from Wood FurnitureDon’t avoid your favorite antique stores or yard sales because of the fear of musty wood furniture.  There are countless ways you can acquire an old piece of furniture, and you would hate for smell to be the culprit of getting rid of it.  Use any of the above 5 tips and see if the smell that repelled you before is now just a notion of the past!

Freshome reader’s have you ever been deterred from buying furniture because of its odor? Did you buy it anyway and find a way to get rid of it? We’d love to hear what method worked for you.

Confirmed: Droid 2 hack brings FM radio, in one ear and out the other

When we heard that the Motorola Droid 2 was the latest Android handset to nab the ancient magic of frequency modulated audio using Droid X files, we just had to give it a try, and sure enough, if you’ve got root, the FM Radio app can be yours with a quick download and just a few lines of code. Before you run off to void your warranty, however, you should know it’s got a fairly desirable feature missing — it only plays audio out of the right earphone. But hey, if we’re going old school, we might as well go all the way, right? Excuse us while we go listen to some glorious monoaural sound. Files and instructions at our source links, immediately below.

X2 Resort Kui Buri by Duangrit Bunnag Architects

Thai architect Duangrit Bunnag, designed the X2 Resort Kui Buri in Thailand.

.

Extending over several beachfront hectares on the Gulf of Thailand, X2 Resort Kui Buri (Hua Hin) enfolds its lucky visitors in just a little paradise on earth. It relaxes the eyes with uninterrupted sea views and engages the senses with a combination of indigenous materials and modern lines. This is feng shui meets utopian community in a design by Duangrit Bunnag, for whom simplicity means spatial economy and a lack of complication. Guests can absolutely unwind in 23 villas. These are largely identical with understated furnishings and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto the beach, yet a certain individuality lies in their proximity to the bordering terrace, adjacent pool and neighbouring garden areas.

The resort makes use of invisible wall design – what’s a craggy stone wall to one villa appears as a fence partition to another. Common areas include a large pool, indulgent spa, a fusion restaurant and roof terrace bar that overlooks the sparkling waters of the gulf and a tranquil white-sand beach untouched by development. A smooth wooden boardwalk meanders like a maze through the resort, each twist and turn revealing a new panorama in an environment of unfussed luxury and natural peace.

Amazing Waterfall Home by the Lake

The Waterfall House by Andrés Remy Arquitectos is the result of nature meeting architecture. The lot size and proximity to the lake made this design possible.  Taking into account the sun`s movement and the way it can be used to find the perfect light on one hand and the surrounding buildings on the other, this house was constructed in such a manner that the lake would become the visual focal point. To get a better view of the beautiful lake, it was decided to put the living area at the upper level. This way every movement of the water can be used to turn a usual afternoon into a few hours of pure contemplating.  The house surprises its visitors with an array of senses that move with the water. With its eye-catching reflections and relaxing sounds, the lake is a strong natural element that inspired the incredible waterfall.

The shallow pool embraces the house and you can swear that there is no limit between the natural element – the lake – and the man-made oasis of relaxation- the pool. The lower level shelters the private areas and gives the so much needed privacy. The limits are broken once more with the room that has three functions: garage, playroom and party room. The master bedroom ceiling opens to the sky leaving room for romance.  The front part of the house offers privacy  by hosting the service areas. Every window is placed to offer as much privacy as they can but at the same time, the windows should not steal the breathtaking view.
